Te Roopu Taurima O Manukau
Enthusiastic Maori travelled to Te Puru on Friday 03 September to take part in the organisation's
sports day. The competitors were all in residential care operated by the organisation, so this really was the big day out for all concerned.
Coast Ads spoke to Pita Cherrington CEO, of Te Roopu Taurima O Manukau and he briefed us on the day's events. Pita explained that competitors had travelled from all over the north island to participate in the annual event.
Unfavourable weather meant the opening ceremony had to be held in the hall, but things improved after lunch so the Auckland -v- Waikato Touch game went ahead as planned. Players with various levels of disability were rotated and the more severely handicapped seemed to express the greatest joy at participating.
There were some very useful players amongst the 2 squads and at times the game got extremely competitive, much to the delight of those watching from the touch line.
The sight of so many disadvantaged people participating with so much enthusiasm was truly humbling. Coast Ads salutes Te Roopu Taurima O Manukau for it's amazing work and for organising such a joyous event for everyone. Click here for image gallery
